GPSR Compliance for Shopify Sellers

If you sell non-food consumer products to EU customers through Shopify, the EU General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR) applies to your listings. Shopify has rolled out GPSR fields and guidance for merchants selling into the EU, and stores that ship to EU customers are responsible for meeting GPSR on their own product pages. GPSR has been enforced since 13 December 2024 with no grace period; marketplaces such as Amazon, eBay, and Shopify are already removing non-compliant listings, and national authorities can impose fines.

Core GPSR requirements for every listing

The General Product Safety Regulation (EU) 2023/988 applies to virtually all non-food consumer products placed on the EU market, including products sold online from outside the EU. Four requirements appear on nearly every non-compliant listing:

1. EU Responsible Person — a named person or entity established in the EU, with a postal address, shown on the product or packaging and in the listing.

2. Manufacturer information — name, registered trade name or trademark, and a postal/electronic contact address.

3. Product traceability — a model, type, batch, or serial number so a product can be identified and recalled.

4. Safety warnings — any necessary warnings and instructions provided in the language(s) of the member state where the product is sold.

Steps to become GPSR compliant

First, if you are based outside the EU, appoint an EU Responsible Person — an EU-established economic operator who takes on compliance duties (several services provide this for a monthly fee). Second, update every listing with the manufacturer details, the Responsible Person, and a product identifier, and add safety warnings in the relevant EU languages. Third, keep technical and traceability records so products can be traced through your supply chain. Finally, re-check listings regularly, because marketplaces audit continuously and new products must be checked as they are added.

GPSR on Shopify specifically

Shopify has rolled out GPSR fields and guidance for merchants selling into the EU, and stores that ship to EU customers are responsible for meeting GPSR on their own product pages. In practice this means populating the GPSR-related fields for every EU-facing listing: manufacturer name and contact address, the EU Responsible Person, a product identifier for traceability, and the required safety warnings in the relevant EU languages. Treat compliance as ongoing — Shopify audits listings continuously, and a previously live listing can be suppressed if information is missing or out of date.

Frequently Asked Questions

When did GPSR start being enforced?

The General Product Safety Regulation has applied since 13 December 2024. There was no transition or grace period, so listings were expected to be compliant from day one.

What happens if my listing is not GPSR compliant?

Online marketplaces are obligated to act on non-compliant listings and have been removing them. Beyond delisting, national market-surveillance authorities can require corrective action, order recalls, and impose financial penalties.

Do I need an EU Responsible Person if I sell from outside the EU?

Yes. A product may only be placed on the EU market if there is an economic operator established in the EU — a manufacturer, importer, authorised representative, or fulfilment service provider — responsible for the compliance tasks set out in the GPSR.

Will Shopify remove my listing if it is not GPSR compliant?

Yes. Shopify has rolled out GPSR fields and guidance for merchants selling into the EU, and stores that ship to EU customers are responsible for meeting GPSR on their own product pages. Missing GPSR information can lead to a listing being suppressed or removed, so the safest approach is to complete every required field before going live in the EU.
